- Halloween Boat Burning
West Sayville, New York
-
Customs and superstitions gathered through the ages go into the celebration of Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, on October 31st , the Christian festival of All Saints . It has its origins, however, in the autumn festivals of earlier times.
The ancient Druids had a three day celebration at the beginning of November. They believed that on the last night of October spirits of the dead roamed abroad, and they lighted bonfires to drive them away. In ancient Rome , the festival of Pomona , goddess of fruits and gardens, occurred at about this time of year. It was an occasion of rejoicing associated with the harvest; and nuts and apples, as symbols of the winter store of fruit, were roasted before huge bonfires. But these agricultural and pastoral celebrations also had a sinister aspect, with ghosts and witches thought to be on the prowl.
Even after November 1st became a Christian feast day honoring all saints, many people clung to the old pagan beliefs and customs that had grown up about Halloween. Some tried to foretell the future on that night by performing such rites as jumping over lighted candles. In the British Isles , great bonfires blazed for the Celtic festival of Samhain. Laughing bands of guisers (young people disguised in grotesque masks) carved lanterns from turnips and carried them through the villages.
In the United States, children carve faces on hollowed-out pumpkins and put lighted candles inside to make jack-o'-lanterns. Halloween celebrations today reflect many of these early customs.
Here, at the Long Island Maritime Museum we like celebrate our own version of these ancient rites. Instead of a real skeleton, we burn the "bones" of a boat....a boat whose "time has come."
Any of the boats we have burned since 1990 at our annual Halloween event have been vessels which are no longer safe to sail or restore, and are of no value to our collection.
While it is always sad to bid farewell to a boat, we also welcome the "harvest” of the fruits of labor of our volunteers in the Penney Boat Shop, by raffling off a skiff built by these craftsmen and introducing the boat to be raffled off for the following year.
We thank you for your support of the Museum during the past year and invite you to join with us in celebrating these events.

Each year, as a much-well needed fundraiser, the volunteer crew from the Moonbeam Boatshop build a boat to be used as a raffle to raise funds for the Museum. This year's raffle boat is a lightweight rowing/sailing sharpie skiff. The skiff is a truly versatile boat. It features a rare boat combination of rowing and sailing. As a sailboat, the sailing rig is easy to set up and handle. As a rowboat, the long, easy glide and excellent tracking makes rowing easy.
The Long Island Maritime Museum 2007 raffle boat is a lightweight sailing/rowing sharpie skiff. Designed by Naval Architect Stephen Redmond. Built by the Museum Boat Shop Volunteers!
