From the Preface- "This book could have been entitled Everything I Wish I had Known About Special Events Before I Agreed to be Chair! Very few people who lead fundraising events have ever been taught how to do them well. Done skillfully, events can bring your organization new money, superb pubic relations, potential new donors and volunteers, and/or serve as an opportunity to build team spirit among volunteers and staff." Skillfully done is what your event will be if you follow the lead of this brand new book. The authors share their hard learned secrets so you can produce an event that not only will meet your financial goals, but is rewarding for all involved. This 168 page book is really two books in one. The first section looks at fundraising events in a generic sense. It's five sub-sections deal with guiding principles of fundraising events, choosing the right event, event volunteers, planning, budgeting, and publicizing your fundraising event, and evaluating your fundraising event. Lots of practical tips that help inspire and motivate event chairpersons and staff. The pitfalls and the shortcuts are both covered. This book will put your fundraising event on a solid foundation so that it may flourish. Adaptable for all events. The second section focus' tightly down on one fundraising event- The Dynamite Dinner. This a celebrity waiter/waitress community dinner that has the potential to raise substantial funds. And with the carefully laid plans and guidelines in the book, it surely will. The six subsections to the Dynamite Dinner include: Deciding to Sponsor the Event, Selecting Event Leadership, Completing Tasks in Preparation for the Event, Managing the Evening of the Event, Following up after the Event, and Continuing the Impact of this Event. This section has detailed checklists and forms, letters, lists, budgets criteria selection and more that the reader can adapt to their own organization or event. The authors have done their homework well. It appears every conceivable angle is covered in detail. The 29 appendixes cover everything from job descriptions and budgets to sample invitations and guest response cards. These are obviously time tested materials that will enhance any event. The authors are writing from experience and it shows.
This is a book every nonprofit should have on its bookshelf. The book doesn't cost you to own, it pays you!
