Investing in Your Volunteers Pays Off
Doug Seebeck, Director of Partners for Christian Development, learned a very important lesson early on about volunteers: you need to listen to them.
One of Partners' volunteers was giving countless hours to the ministry. Doug asked the volunteer, "What can we do to help you do your job better?" The volunteer asked for some financial support to cover essential costs associated with his volunteer efforts. Partners gave him what he asked for, and was very pleasantly surprised with the results. The volunteer began promoting the ministry to donors in addition to his existing valuable volunteer service, and raised over $250,000 in estate, cash gifts, and gifts-in-kind.
What has Doug learned about volunteers?
- Involve them. Ask for their ideas and their time.
- Recognize them. Treat them like "leaders", "champions", and "advocates."
- Listen to them. Ask your volunteers what you can do to make them more successful.
