Develop a Selection of Board Feature Ideas
Reprinted with permission from Successful Fund Raising newsletter (stevensoninc.com)
To what degree are you doing feature stories about both your collective board and individual board members? Don’t overlook the benefits of stories related to your organization’s top leaders. Articles about those who oversee your organization add another level of credibility to your cause. Plus, readers find such human interest stories to be of interest.
Develop a checklist of board-related story ideas from which to choose for internal and external publications, for news releases to distribute to area news media, and for feature ideas to hand feed news media. Here are some story angles to consider:
- Percentage of board support for your recent capital campaign.
- Collective power of your board: A profile of the positions of influence they hold.
- Ways your board is making a difference for people served by your organization.
- A profile of how one board member’s major gift is making a noticeable difference at your organization.
- Examples of how your board has taken a visionary approach in addressing its future.
- How one board member continues to go the extra mile in service.
- Profiles of what attracted board members to your cause.
- A question/answer interview with a board member about a relevant topic with which he/she has expertise.
In addition to bringing valuable visibility to your cause, the publication of these stories will also serve to further cultivate board members’ commitment to your organization.
